Welcome to Year 3

This term our topic is

Tomb Raiders!

We’re heading off on an exciting adventure this term as we become Tomb Raiders, diving deep into the fascinating world of Ancient Egypt! From mummies to pharaohs, pyramids to hieroglyphics, the children will explore what life was really like thousands of years ago along the River Nile.

In English, we’ll be reading a variety of texts including Rhythm of the Rain, Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx, Wisp and A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream. The children will step into the shoes of brave explorers and unique characters, writing information texts, letters, potions and more! Throughout our reading we create regular opportunities for pupils to reflect, wonder, and ask meaningful questions about themselves, others, and the wider world.

Our maths learning will begin with exploring mass and capacity, then moving onto fractions—finding parts of shapes, numbers, and amounts, followed by a practical unit all about money, perfect for building real-life skills.  Later in the term, we will be looking at telling the time and statistics.

In history, we’ll look closely at the daily lives of Ancient Egyptians: what they ate, wore, believed, and how they lived.  Geography lessons will explore the importance of the River Nile, as well as the human and physical geography of modern and ancient Egypt. We’ll find out why the Nile was so vital to Egyptian life and how the landscape shaped their civilisation. Our history and geography themes will help us understand our love in action focus on peace, justice and strong institutions.

Our science topic, Animals Including Humans, will help us to investigate the skeletons of different creatures (including us!) and explore the importance of a healthy, balanced diet.

Throughout our Tomb Raiders topic, children will be encouraged to think deeply about some of life’s “big questions”: Who am I? Where do I fit in? Why am I here? As we learn about Ancient Egyptian beliefs about life, death, and the afterlife, pupils will have time to compare these ideas thoughtfully with their own beliefs and with Christian understanding, developing respect, curiosity, and empathy for others’ views.

Art lessons will be full of creativity as we explore printing techniques, taking inspiration from Egyptian patterns and symbols.  In DT, we’ll uncover just how ingenious the Ancient Egyptians were by exploring their fascinating inventions.

In RE we will be following an enquiry discussing what religion and worldviews can tell us about conflict, peace, fogiveness and reconciliation and if this is important? We will also be developing our understanding of Christianity through investigating 'When Jesus left, what was the impact of Pentecost?'

The highlight of the term will undoubtedly be our trip to the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. We’ll be visiting the incredible Egyptian galleries, getting up close to ancient artefacts, and learning more about life and death in Ancient Egypt—providing rich opportunities for awe, curiosity and thoughtful reflection. It’s going to be a real wow moment!

Our wide range of reading and writing opportunities alongside all of our fascinating topics enables us to explore and understand our school values this term which are thankfulness, friendship, trust and compassion.

It’s going to be a busy and brilliant term — we can’t wait to get started!
