Music at Harbury

Intent

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon. (The National Curriculum)

At Harbury, we believe that music plays an integral role in helping children to feel part of a community, therefore we provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music both in class and to an audience. It is our vision that music lessons across the school give children the tools and opportunity to become musicians.

To ensure our pupils have the best opportunity to acquire and nurture their musical talents and awareness, we use ‘Charanga’, a program that teaches the children to listen and respond to a variety of musical genres and cultures, through the medium of singing, playing instruments, exploring form and composing their own musical creations.

What does Music look like at Harbury?

In the Early Years

In the early Years, music is incorporated consistently into daily routines and is used to enhance teaching of the core curriculum in addition to being taught as a stand-alone subject.

Singing, playing musical instruments and moving to music have many benefits for children in the early years:

Nursery rhymes introduce children to new words and help them to recognise the sounds in words.

Dancing and moving to songs and (live/recorded) music teaches balance, strength, and coordination.

Action songs and playing musical instruments support with fine and gross motor skill development.

Songs with numbers in boost early numeracy skills.

Songs support with transitions and routines.

Songs and nursery rhymes build emotional awareness.

  It brings joy and laughter!

 In KS1 and KS2

Our curriculum has been designed to reflect the aims and purpose of the national curriculum by supporting pupils to develop their knowledge of music and skills in music-making, instilling a love of music and musical learning as well as fostering creativity, expression and confidence.

As the children move through the school they participate in a broad and exciting range of musical learning opportunities and enhancements

Take a look at some of the fantastic opportunities that are included in our enriched musical offer at Harbury.

Our Fabulous School Choir.

Choir is a very popular aspect of our music culture at Harbury. Children are given opportunities to sing at church services, at the Harbury Carnival every summer, at Galanos House, our local care home, as well as at Young Voices in Birmingham. ‘Young Voices’ is the world’s largest children’s choir concert. During choir practice they rehearse, and then perform, a wide variety of songs and dance moves to a packed concert arena alongside their peers, children from other schools and incredible artists. The ‘Young Voices’ concerts are a magical and unforgettable experience for all of the children involved. This year 32 children took part.

Trombone lessons in Year 3

We are also fortunate that the whole of Year 3 learns to play the trombone for a year. This is supported by the Napton Music Festival. We employ Mr Stoneman from Warwickshire Music Services to provide this opportunity. Children are given lots of encouragement to perform their skills in front of an audience, including at church services, in school productions, as well as at our ‘Night of Music’ evening held at the end of each school year.

They perform once for Napton Festival board members who sponsor the lessons and once for parents and Y2 children.

The Napton Music festival have also provided an Ipad for a child with a visual impairment so she can enjoy music instantly.

Musician and Artist of the Month

At the start of each worship, we explore with the children a different piece of music as part of our Artist and Musician of the month. Teachers are encouraged to play these in their classes too and to discuss both the artist and musician in more depth.

ISingPop

Earlier this year we welcomed iSingPOP to Harbury School where the children were involved in a singing and performing project. iSingPOP is a singing, performing and resourcing project that helps children and families engage in Collective Worship in school, church and at home. The children (and staff) learned and performed a number of special songs with actions, which support our school values as well as coming together as a whole school community choir.

EXCITING NEWS!!

We will be welcoming back Emma, our isingpop coach to lead a lunchtime worship club!
